The Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, an annual event, kicked off with a bang, attracting a steady stream of participants and spectators to Dauphin Island. Despite the forecast of hot and clear weather, some anglers reported rough conditions in the Gulf, but that didn't deter them from reeling in some impressive catches.
One of the highlights was the capture of a massive bull shark by the Dark Matter fishing team, weighing in at an impressive 478.6 pounds, eliciting cheers from onlookers. This catch was particularly notable as it came close to breaking the state record of 494 pounds set during the 2024 rodeo.
Another exciting development was the introduction of a live-catch category for tripletail, also known as blackfish. These fish are renowned for their delicious taste, and the question of whether anglers would be willing to release them for tagging and study was an intriguing one. By the end of the first day, two tripletail had been tagged and released, weighing in at 17.42 and 19.23 pounds, respectively.
Crystal Hightower, senior research laboratory manager at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, oversaw the process of measuring and tagging these fish. She expressed excitement about the potential for a Gulf-wide study on cobia and tripletail, aiming to understand their movements, distribution, and growth patterns. Hightower believes that the live-catch category is a step towards more sustainable fishing practices, as it allows for ongoing research and learning about these species.
"The live weigh-in and tagging at the tournament is so cool because that fish's story doesn't end," she said. "We're going to continue not just to learn about the fish during the tournament, but we're going to continue to learn about that fish throughout the year for years to come."
Hightower shared an example of a tripletail tagged last August that was recaptured in Texas over 500 miles away, highlighting the value of tagging in understanding fish migration and behavior.
The rodeo organizers, despite some competition from events like the Pensacola Beach Air Show, are expecting a busy and successful weekend. Cody Ward, vice president of publicity, expressed hope that the Blue Angels' flight demonstration wouldn't overshadow the tournament, emphasizing the three-day format that allows for a diverse range of activities and attractions.
The rodeo site is open to spectators, offering a unique opportunity to witness the excitement of deep-sea fishing, with vendors, concessions, and live music adding to the festive atmosphere. The schedule for the upcoming weekend includes performances by Ryan Balthrop, Channing Spicer, and Kat Deal, providing entertainment for visitors and participants alike.
