A simple yet captivating red and blue silk sari, belonging to Indian space scientist Nandini Harinath, now stands as a testament to the incredible journey of India's Mars mission and the pivotal role played by women in space exploration.
The story of this sari is a fascinating one, and it begins on a momentous day in December 2013. As the deputy operations director for Mangalyaan, India's ambitious Mars Orbiter Mission, Nandini chose this vibrant garment for a reason. It was a day of high stakes, a "do-or-die" moment, and the sari, a gift from her father, had become her lucky charm for significant occasions.
"We had to make crucial decisions that day," Nandini recalled. "The success of the mission hinged on our actions. It was a tense yet exhilarating experience."
And succeed they did. Mangalyaan entered Martian orbit in September 2014, making India the first Asian country and the fourth in the world to achieve this feat, and the first to do so on its maiden attempt. What's more, the mission exceeded expectations, operating for nearly eight years instead of the planned six to ten months.
But it was a photograph, capturing the moment of triumph in the ISRO control room, that truly brought the story to life. Women scientists, clad in colorful saris, were celebrating their achievement, shattering global stereotypes about the gender dynamics of rocket science. Matt Shindell, the space history curator at the Smithsonian, recognized the significance of this moment. He reached out to Nandini in 2020 to discuss how best to represent India's Mars mission and her role in it. The choice was clear: the sari she wore on that historic day.
"The sari carries a dual meaning," Shindell explained. "It symbolizes India's national pride in its space program and its successful Mars mission. But it also tells Nandini's personal story, an inspiring tale that could encourage more women to pursue science."
The sari's journey to the Smithsonian was not without its challenges. Textiles conservator Beth Knight had to learn the art of draping it correctly, a skill she honed by watching YouTube videos. But the effort was worth it, as the sari now stands proudly displayed in the Futures in Space gallery, alongside other iconic artifacts of space exploration, including Sally Ride's blue t-shirt from her historic 1983 mission.
Nandini's sari is more than just a garment; it's a symbol of India's success and a reminder of the diverse and talented individuals who contribute to space exploration.
